Tally Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 7, 2026

The short version

Tally does not collect, sell, or share your personal data. Your food log, body weight, and health inputs stay on your device and sync only through your own private iCloud account, which we have no way to access. Apple Health data is read-only and never leaves your device.

Tally (“the app”) is an iPhone and Apple Watch nutrition tracker developed by Samuel Petrarca (“we,” “us”). This policy explains exactly what happens to your information when you use Tally.

Information you create

Everything you enter in Tally — your food library, food logs, daily nutrition, calorie and macro targets and formulas, body weight, and the biometric details you provide to calculate your target (height, weight, age, and biological sex) — is stored locally on your device using Apple’s on-device database (SwiftData).

If you are signed in to iCloud and have iCloud enabled for Tally, this data also syncs across your own Apple devices through Apple’s CloudKit private database. That data lives in your iCloud account. We do not operate any server that receives it, and under Apple’s CloudKit model the developer cannot read the contents of your private database. We never see what you eat or weigh.

Apple Health (HealthKit)

If you choose to connect Apple Health, Tally requests read-only access to two values — your step count and active energy — to fine-tune your daily calorie target. This data is:

  • used only on your device, to compute your target;
  • never written back to Apple Health;
  • never transmitted off your device or to us;
  • never used for advertising or shared with third parties.

Health access is entirely optional — Tally works without it, and you can grant or revoke it any time in iOS Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices. In keeping with Apple’s requirements, information read from Apple Health is never used for marketing and is not shared with anyone.

Camera & label scanning

If your version of Tally includes nutrition-label scanning, the app may ask to use your camera so you can photograph a Nutrition Facts panel. The image is processed entirely on your device using Apple’s on-device Vision text recognition to pre-fill a food’s details. The photo is not uploaded anywhere and is not stored by us. Camera access is optional and only used when you start a scan.

What we don’t do

  • We don’t require an account, email, or sign-up.
  • We don’t use third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs.
  • We don’t collect your location, contacts, or device identifiers for tracking.
  • We don’t sell, rent, or share your data with anyone.

Information Apple processes

Parts of Tally rely on Apple, and are governed by Apple’s Privacy Policy:

  • iCloud sync — handled entirely by Apple between your devices.
  • Subscriptions — Tally Pro is an optional auto-renewable subscription purchased through the App Store. Apple processes the payment; we never receive or store your name, card number, or billing details. Apple provides us only with aggregate, non-identifying sales and analytics reports.

Permissions

Tally may request two optional permissions: Apple Health (read-only steps and active energy) and the camera (for label scanning). Both are optional, both are explained when requested, and the app is fully usable without either. Tally does not request your location, microphone, or contacts.

Children’s privacy

Tally is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone — because we don’t collect personal information at all.

Keeping and deleting your data

Because your data lives on your device and in your iCloud, you control it. To remove it: delete entries within the app, delete the app from your device, and/or remove Tally’s data from iCloud in iOS Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage. Once removed from your devices and iCloud, it’s gone — we hold no copy.

Changes to this policy

If we change how Tally handles data, we’ll update this page and revise the “Last updated” date above. Material changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
